Comprehensive strength is rapidly gaining momentum.
In 2006, Zhuji city’s total output value reached 37.676 billion yuan, 35,659 yuan per capita, and it had a fiscal revenue of 3.343 billion yuan. With steady progress in project “255,” the construction of an advanced manufacturing base, we have three industrial groups generating an annual total output value of over 20 billion yuan, twelve specialized markets generating over 100 million yuan annually, over 120 industrial enterprises generating a turnover of over 100 million yuan. We have the highest number of nationally recognized brand names. Zhuji enjoys steady progress in the industrialization of agriculture and a rapid development in modern agriculture in pearls and Chinese torreya nuts as well as other products. We have an agricultural base of 660,000 mu, 269 key agricultural enterprises and have been recognized as Advanced County Nationwide in Grain Yield and the Construction of Irrigation and Water Conservancy. Zhuji is now 88% a well-off society and its comprehensive strength is now ranked 24th in the top hundred counties nationwide, thus being one of the counties most rapidly improving in the rankings.

Profound change in urban and rural areas
Dedicated to the expansion of the city, the development in the industrial zone of the western part of the city, the improvement of the old city, and the acceleration of perfecting a complete set of facilities on the eastern side of Huan Sha River, we have expanded the urban area to 32.9 square miles. The urbanization rate has reached 56.4%, so a newly established medium-sized city has initially been formed. We have been recognized as National Garden City, National Public Health City and successfully passed inspection by the State Environmental Protection Bureau to be a National Model City of Environmental Protection. We have also, for the first time, been named one of the top 200 counties nationwide with the most distinguishing features. Thanks to rapid economic growth, 8 towns in Zhuji have entered the top hundred towns in Zhejiang province; Dian Kou and Da Tang both ranked in the top 10 towns in Zhejiang and the top 20 in China. The construction of a new village, overall planning of practical projects, rural transportation construction projects and the improvement of both drinking water and the environment has won support from our residents. We will actively expand villages and accelerate the integration of the urban and rural areas.
Deepening of the reform and opening
With nearly completed all around and multi-level reform, enhanced regional cooperation, and our performance as an export-oriented economy, Zhuji has won Advanced City of Zhejiang Province and Gold Prize of Shaoxing City for three consecutive years. Its foreign capital and foreign trade also ranked provincial top ten for three consecutive years. From 2003 to 2006, accumulated foreign-invested projects in Zhuji reached 348 and its actual foreign capital reached $638 million, 83.9% of the actual foreign capital ever held by Zhuji. We now have 440 more enterprises managing their own exports, generating $4.79 billion. With the further deepening of reform we have basically completed property relations reform in state-owned township enterprises and accelerated the reform in rural tax and administrative systems. We have also improved the efficiency of the local government, have been offering favorable policies for foreign investment and perfecting the regional socialist market economy.
Harmonious development in sociobusiness
Thanks to the Etiquette Zhuji educational activity, Zhuji has won Model Civilized City of Zhejiang Province, and thanks to the increased strength in high-quality education, the Study in Zhuji program is spreading out further. The better human resources distribution, progress in science and technology and the rural popularization of science has attributed to the award County of Advanced Science of Zhejiang Province. The Legend of Xi Shi has been designated a national non-material cultural heritage and Justice, an opera written in Zhuji, has won the gold prize in China Yue Opera Festival. We have been working on rural health projects and improving the public health system, and the performance of rural traditional Chinese medicine is regarded as excellent. Zhuji is also a competitive county in sports and successfully sponsored the Sixth Shaoxing Sports Meet. Additionally, with the improvement in people’s quality and the sound performance of family planning reform, Zhuji was awarded Advanced Group in Population and Family Planning in the Tenth Five-Year Plan in Zhejiang Province.
Higher living standards
In 2006, per capita disposable income reached 20,056 yuan for urban residents and per capita net income reached 9,050 yuan for rural residents in Zhuji, a 71.3% and 51% rise from 2002, respectively, and the excess of savings deposits of the urban and rural residents doubles those of 2002. Thanks to the improvement and expansion of social security, workers with pension security increased to over 140,000 and their ability to pay into funds for pensions, housing and other basic needs can last for 30 months. The medical services have covered 92.5% of the rural area and the minimum living standard security system for both urban and rural residents has also been improving. We follow the example of Feng Qiao, a highly successful town, and enhance safe production. We are building a safer Zhuji and improving the living standards for our people.
