Zhuji, one of the ancient capitals of Yue Kingdom and the native place of Xishi, becoming the county in the Qin Dysnasty and not been abolished for the past dynasties, has a profound history. In Sep., 1989, Zhuji County was abolished and to be Zhuji County-level City. In July of 1994, its first round gross layout was approved by Zhejiang Provincial People’s Government to implement, and after efforts though many years, a new middling city frame has been formed, focusing on Puyang River, with successively developed east and west downtown, and all parts of the city developed expanding, support each other, and harmoniously developing. By the end of 2001, Zhuji urban area has hit 21.8 sq kilometers, with urban population of 202 thousand persons, per capita road area of 10 sq meters, virescence coverage of 30%, per capita public greenbelt of 6.15 sq meters, per capita housing area of 20 sq meters, and urbanization rate of the whole Zhuji of 43%.

In June, 2001, the new round urban gross layout was approved by Zhejiang Provincial People’s Government to implement. The new issued urban gross layout has defined Zhuji’s downtown’s characteristic to be a garden downtown as the political, economic, cultural and information center of the whole Zhuji, giving priority to industry and trade. It’s programmed that till the year of 2020, urbanization rate of the whole Zhuji would hit above 65%, the urban population would be 860 thousand persons, including 350 thousand persons in the central downtown, and urban area would be 35 sq kilometers.

In recent years, numbers of large scaled infrastructure key projects like Zhuji City Square, Sewage Treatment Factory, and Xishi Temple Scenic Region Enlarging Project, has successively started and completed, and a series of top grade scaled housing communities like New Century Garden, Sunshine Garden, and Guihua Garden, has been successively opened to reside. The rudimental landscape garden city of Zhuji has preliminarily formed.
